Lifou, Mystery Island or Noumea: Which Cruise Port Day Is Best?

Most South Pacific cruises from Australia stop at three or four island ports in a row. Lifou, Mystery Island and Noumea turn up together on itinerary after itinerary. They could hardly be more different. One is an uninhabited sand cay, one is a raised coral island with Kanak villages and one is a French Pacific capital. This guide compares the three port days so you know what to expect, what to book ahead and where your best day ashore is likely to be. It is written from Noumea by Fernando, who grew up in Vanuatu and has met cruise passengers at the Noumea terminal since 2013.

Noumea: the big port day

Noumea is the only one of the three where the ship ties up at a terminal, so you walk straight into town with the most time ashore. It is also the port with the most to do. In a single day you can stand on the Ouen Toro lookout over the UNESCO listed lagoon, swim at Anse Vata, see the flightless Cagou in Blue River Park or explore the convict history of Fort Téremba. Because there is so much choice, Noumea is the port where planning pays off. Our guide to what to do in Noumea on a cruise day covers the timings and the Noumea shore excursions guide compares every option.

Lifou: cliffs, coves and Kanak villages

Lifou is the largest of New Caledonia’s Loyalty Islands, a raised coral island with dramatic limestone cliffs and a strong Kanak identity. Passengers come ashore by tender at Easo. Highlights include the hilltop chapel of Notre Dame de Lourdes with its sweeping sea views, the clear water of Jinek Bay for snorkelling, the cliffs at Jokin and the long white beach at Luengoni. Life here runs at village pace and the island is known for its vanilla.

Lifou rewards a little planning because sights are spread out and transport is limited on busy ship days. Pack reef shoes and snorkel gear, carry some XPF cash and remember that much of the land belongs to local clans, so stick to marked paths and ask before photographing people.

Mystery Island: the postcard beach day

Mystery Island, known locally as Inyeug, is a small sand cay off Aneityum in the far south of Vanuatu. Nobody lives on it. On cruise days people from Aneityum cross over to set up stalls, sell crafts and coconuts and offer glass bottom boat rides. You can walk around the whole island in about an hour. The main attractions are the white sand, the reef just off the beach and a long, lazy swim. It is the most relaxed of the three port days and the one where you least need anything booked.

Bring sun protection, water and some small vatu notes. There is very little shade and no shops beyond the stalls, so treat it like a beach day and you will love it.

Which port day is best?

  • For sightseeing and variety: Noumea. It has the most to see and the most time ashore.
  • For snorkelling in a quieter setting: Lifou, especially around Jinek Bay.
  • For a pure beach day: Mystery Island.
  • For culture: Lifou for village life and Noumea for Kanak history at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre.
  • For first time cruisers: plan Noumea properly, keep Lifou simple and relax on Mystery Island.

Common questions

Do I need to book tours in Lifou and Mystery Island?

On Mystery Island, no. Everything happens within a short walk of the tender landing. On Lifou, booking ahead makes sense if you want to reach the chapel, Jinek Bay and Luengoni in one day, because local transport fills up when a ship is in.

Can tender ports be cancelled?

Yes. Lifou and Mystery Island both rely on tender boats, so rough seas can cancel a landing. Noumea is a docked port and is rarely missed for weather. That is one more reason to make the most of your Noumea day.

Which currency do I need?

Pacific francs (XPF) in Noumea and Lifou, vatu in Mystery Island. Cards work widely in Noumea but cash is king on the islands. Check with your ship whether Australian dollars are being accepted on the day.

Which port has the most to do?

Noumea, by a long way. It is a capital city with beaches, lookouts, markets, museums and day trips into rainforest and history, all reachable within your time in port.
