(Pic above) “Twenty of us went on the tour with Fernando and he was fun from start to finish. He welcomed us with bottled water and garlands of flowers and we travelled in a good quality airconditioned mini bus. The fun started right from the jetty despite the town being full of trucks ready to block the streets through an industrial dispute. The itinerary had to be changed and we were not able to have dinner at Fernando’s house, however we were taken to a very nice French restaurant. We were with Fernando for 4hrs and he was very knowledgeable about the area. He was always aware that we needed to be back at the ship by a certain time. After spending several days in his company, including long drives up the west coast, when he left us at Tontouta airport for the trip home, we realised we had made a new and reliable friend in a destination which we visit as frequently as we can. ‘If we had spent the day with Fernando on our first day, we would have not wasted our first day trying to piece together an activity itinerary. Tourist information centre was not informative and their brochures did not explain what tours were available, schedules or cost. Fernando knew it all. I would highly recommend exploring the cultural center with Fernando. He provides the stories, roles of the chief, and the traditions that you just would not get doing it unguided.
To be welcomed into his home to meet his beautiful wife and baby son was unprecedented in my travels so far,being served a traditional meal with wonderful conversation and humor was the highlight. Our recommendations could not do justice to the experience.

From the moment we met Fernando, his effervescent personality and charisma shone through. ‘We had a very special time with Fernando, showing us the sights of Noumea in his comfortable van. He allows time for photos, he has incredible knowledge and is so proud of Noumea.
