1. Look over the lagoon from Ouen Toro
The twin gun emplacements on Ouen Toro hill give the best free view in the city: the full sweep of the UNESCO World Heritage lagoon, Anse Vata below and the barrier reef on the horizon. Drive up or walk the trails from Anse Vata.
2. Swim at Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons
Noumea’s two town beaches sit five minutes apart. Baie des Citrons is calmer and lined with restaurants, Anse Vata catches the trade winds and the kite surfers. Both are free, safe and swimmable year round.
3. Meet the Cagou at Blue River Park
An hour from town, Parc Provincial de la Rivière Bleue is the single best day trip in the south: 9,000 hectares of rainforest and red-soil maquis, the drowned forest of Lake Yaté, the 1,000 year old Grand Kaori tree and better than 90 percent odds of seeing the flightless Cagou with a guide who knows its territories. 4. Walk Place des Cocotiers
The palm shaded square at the centre of town is where Noumea actually lives: pétanque games, food trucks, the bandstand and the flame trees in bloom from November. Free and two minutes from the cruise terminal.
5. Tjibaou Cultural Centre
Renzo Piano’s soaring timber pavilions are the architectural landmark of the Pacific and the best introduction to Kanak culture: contemporary art, traditional huts and mangrove walking paths. Allow half a day.
6. Eat your way through the Port Moselle markets
The blue hexagonal market halls by the marina open early: tuna and mahi mahi straight off the boats, mangoes, vanilla, coconut cakes and proper French espresso. Go before 10am, closed Monday.
7. Ride the Tchou Tchou train
The green road train does an easy 90 minute city loop from the cruise terminal. It is unashamedly touristy and exactly right if you have a short port call or limited mobility.
8. Day trip to Amedee Island lighthouse
The white 56 metre lighthouse on its postcard islet is reached by fast ferry from Port Moselle. Snorkelling over the reef, sea snakes (harmless, honestly) and 247 spiral steps for the view. A different product from a land tour – combine them on a longer stay.
9. Fort Téremba and the convict story
France transported 22,000 convicts to New Caledonia between 1864 and 1897 and the restored fort at Téremba, 90 minutes north, tells that story better than anywhere. 10. Aquarium des Lagons

11. Snorkel Duck Island
Five minutes by water taxi from Anse Vata, Île aux Canards has a marked snorkel trail over coral gardens. Half a day well spent on a resort stay.
12. Drive the south to Yaté and the red earth
